These plants often have spiny foliage and thistle-like flowers, usually consisting of a central cone, with a ring of bracts beneath. They dislike root disturbance.

There are over 240 annual, biennial and perennial species found in almost every part of the world. 

Most species require well-drained, nutrient-poor soil in full sun. They are good drought-tolerant plants.
