ECHINACEA

ECHINACEA

ASTERACEAE

Coneflowers are so called because of the prominent centres to their daisy-like flowers. They attract bees and butterflies and a root extract is used in herbal medicine to boost the immune system. The common name is also used to refer to the genus Rudbeckia.

There are nine species, all native to North America, but found in a diverse range of habitats from prairies and woodland to rocky hillsides.

They grow best in full sun, in a fertile, but well-drained soil. Excess moisture in winter is not tolerated and root disturbance is not advisable.
