These woodland plants are grown for their heart-shaped, often silvered or variegated, foliage and clusters of small blue or white flowers in spring.

Only 3 species occur, native to the forests of the eastern Mediterranean through to Turkey and Russia.    

They grow well in dry shade, but will tolerate less shady conditions if the soil is moister.
