A genus of about 40 species of succulent evergreen plants growing in rosettes. Their distribution is throughout Southern Europe to the Sahara Desert.

They grow in rocky sunny places on the edge of the alpine belt.

Their thick leaves allow storage of water so they can tolerate harsh conditions.

Many named garden varieties are available they are ideal for paving cracks or shallow troughs.
