This genus is closely related to Aquilegia, but the flowers are generally smaller and do not have spurs, and are usually pink or purple. They are often short-lived perennials.

There are seven species, native to the Asian mountain regions, but few of these are found in cultivation.

They require a humus-rich soil and do best in sun or part-shade in a sheltered position.
