This is a genus grown for both foliage and flowers. The leaves are made up of many small, toothed leaflets and flowers are usually white, pink or red and may be hanging tassels, upright spikes or small rounded buttons.
There are about ten species, most of which are grown in gardens. They originate in moist meadows, stream-sides and bogs across the temperate northern hemisphere.
They will grow in sun or part shade, in most good garden soils, although moist conditions are preferred.
