Lungwort are grown for their clusters of spring flowers, which are found in a wide range of colours. They are also valued for their foliage, which is often silvered or spotted.
There are up to 18 perennial species, which grow in a wide range of, usually shady, habitats across Europe and western Asia.
They grow best in part-shade, but many tolerate heavy shade, although flowering may be reduced. Others will survive in sunnier areas, although a humus-rich soil is preferred. Many varieties will grow on most soil types, with the exception of those that are very wet.
