MELIANTHUS

MELIANTHUS

MELIANTHACEAE

These architectural plants are grown mainly for their blue-grey foliage. Flowers are only produced in sheltered conditions in a milder climate.

There are just six species, which are evergreen in their native grasslands of southern Africa, but tend to die back over winter in cooler climates.

They do best in a sheltered spot or coastal areas, in full sun, with a free-draining soil. They can also be containerised and protected in winter.
