Loosestrife produces tall, upright stems that are topped by white, pink or purple flower spikes in summer. The common name is also used to refer to the genus Lysimachia.

There are 38 species of annuals, deciduous perennials and shrubs, growing in damp temperate areas across the world.

They do best in full sun, with moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil and can also be grown as a bog plant.
