LUPINUS
PAPILIONACEAE
Lupins are a popular cottage garden plant, with flowers available in a wide range of colours. Few species are grown in gardens, with the modern hybrid cultivars being much more common. However, these tend to be short-lived.
There are about 200 species of annuals, biennials, perennials and shrubs found in many parts of the world, although predominately in North, Central and South America, the Mediterranean and North Africa.
They do best in sun, with a well-drained soil, but dislike lime. They require plenty of water when in active growth, but will not tolerate winter wet.
