IMPERATA

POACEAE

These plants form upright clumps of grass, grown for their red-purple colouring. They are deciduous and reasonably hardy.

There are eight perennial species that grow naturally in cultivated or disturbed ground in the tropics and warm temperate regions of the world, but only one is found regularly in cultivation. Some species are considered to be invasive weeds in their native habitat.

They are best grown in a sunny site, with fertile, well-drained soil, and plenty of water during the growing season. They can be slow to establish.
