Hellebores come in an increasingly varied range of colours and are valuable for their flowers in late winter and early spring.
There are 16 species, native predominately to Europe, with one or two coming from China and Syria.
Conditions required vary with the species. Some require a shady position, while others need sun. Most grow well in a humus-rich soil, which is neither dry nor waterlogged. Generally, the drier the soil, the more shade is required.
