Goat’s Rue has attractive foliage made up of many small leaflets and spikes of white, blue or lilac pea flowers. These are often coconut-scented.
There are just six deciduous species, native to the mountainous regions of East Africa, or to Europe and southwest Asia, where they grow in meadowland or open forests. Two of these species are commonly found in gardens.
They are easy to grow in any reasonable garden soil. A sunny spot is preferred, but part-shade will be tolerated. They are ideal for naturalistic or wild plantings.
